We remember 9/11 because it continues to be a fresh wound, re-opened again and again by simple, and sometimes scary, reminders - the New York City skyline, acts of terror around the world, the fear before take-off, or the memory of a loved one who was lost that fateful day.
We remember that day 11 years ago because it is a way to stay united as one nation even when divided by politics, religion, and beliefs. We remember that day because we are people with hearts that mourn, people who are affected by loss. To many of us it feels as if it happened yesterday. The pain is still new and throbbing - even after 11 years, it is a dull headache, a fleeting feeling of nausea. What is the harm in remembering? What is the harm in laying aside our differences for one day?
September 11th is a wound that has spurred a resurgence in patriotism but has also bred hatred and fear. It is important to remember and to move forward, to become wise with our memories - this day isn't a day to be angry or hateful, it is a day to mourn a great loss to our country, to take pride in the heroism of our fellow countrymen and women. We are a strong, brave, compassionate country.
Today is also a day to be humbled. There are many places in this world that are under attack continuously - the United States is even one who does the attacking. Can you imagine the horror and the fear that blankets the world in which we are so far removed? We are so lucky to be relatively safe, well-fed, well-taken care of - think of how we have overcome after 9/11. And let us be thankful for our servicemen and women - they are willing to risk their lives, and give their lives, for the very soil beneath our feet, for the words of our forefathers, and for the simple freedoms we take for granted.
We remember 9/11 because it allows us to be more human - to step out of our daily monotony-, to be somber and reflective, to be thankful for our lives and our great country. As time goes on, I hope 9/11 transitions into a day in which we reach out to our brothers and sisters of the world and help them overcome violence and terror - let us strive to preserve life, love, and happiness around the world.
